Integrals: the basics

Find the intersections, then the area

For the area enclosed by two curves, first set the two equations equal to find the xx-coordinates of the intersections, then use them as the lower and upper limits.

f(x)=g(x) ⇒ x=α, β,S=∫αβ{g(x)−f(x)} dx(g(x)≥f(x))\begin{gathered} f(x)=g(x)\ \Rightarrow\ x=\alpha,\ \beta, \\[4pt] S=\int_\alpha^\beta\{g(x)-f(x)\}\,dx\quad(g(x)\ge f(x)) \end{gathered}

The intersections of y=x2y=x^2 and y=x+12y=x+12 come from x2=x+12x^2=x+12, that is x2−x−12=(x+3)(x−4)=0x^2-x-12=(x+3)(x-4)=0, so x=−3, 4x=-3,\ 4.

S=∫−34{(x+12)−x2} dxS=\int_{-3}^{4}\{(x+12)-x^2\}\,dx

Between the intersections the line lies above the parabola, so subtract the parabola from the line. The smaller xx-coordinate is the lower limit and the larger one is the upper limit.

FAQ

Q1Is x=5x=5 the only intersection of y=x2y=x^2 and y=25y=25?AnswerHide
A
x2=25x^2=25 has two solutions, x=±5x=\pm 5. The graphs meet at x=−5x=-5 and x=5x=5, and the enclosed region spans −5≤x≤5-5\le x\le 5.
Q2Can I divide both sides of x2=3xx^2=3x by xx?AnswerHide
A
Dividing by xx is allowed only when x≠0x\ne 0, so the solution x=0x=0 is lost. Factor instead: x2−3x=x(x−3)=0x^2-3x=x(x-3)=0 gives both x=0x=0 and x=3x=3.
