Derivatives: rules and functions

Derivatives of 1/x and √x

Rewrite 1x=x−1\frac{1}{x}=x^{-1} and x=x12\sqrt{x}=x^{\frac{1}{2}} with exponents, and (xr)′=rxr−1(x^r)'=rx^{r-1} applies directly.

(xr)′=rxr−1,(1x)′=−1x2,(x)′=12x\begin{gathered} (x^r)'=rx^{r-1}, \\[4pt] \left(\frac{1}{x}\right)'=-\frac{1}{x^2}, \\[4pt] (\sqrt{x})'=\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}} \end{gathered}

(xn)′=nxn−1(x^n)'=nx^{n-1} also holds when the exponent is negative or a fraction. For 1x=x−1\frac{1}{x}=x^{-1} you get −x−2=−1x2-x^{-2}=-\frac{1}{x^2}, and for x=x12\sqrt{x}=x^{\frac{1}{2}} you get 12x−12=12x\frac{1}{2}x^{-\frac{1}{2}}=\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}.

When the inside is ax+bax+b, the chain rule multiplies by the derivative of the inside, aa.

(ax+b)′=a2ax+b\begin{gathered} \left(\sqrt{ax+b}\right)' \\[4pt] =\frac{a}{2\sqrt{ax+b}} \end{gathered}

For example, (4x+5)′=424x+5=24x+5\left(\sqrt{4x+5}\right)'=\frac{4}{2\sqrt{4x+5}}=\frac{2}{\sqrt{4x+5}}. Reduce the fraction when you can.

FAQ

Q1I got 125x+1\frac{1}{2\sqrt{5x+1}} for the derivative of 5x+1\sqrt{5x+1}. What went wrong?AnswerHide
A
You forgot to multiply by 55, the derivative of the inside 5x+15x+1. The answer is 525x+1\frac{5}{2\sqrt{5x+1}}.
Q2Why is the derivative of 1x\frac{1}{x} negative?AnswerHide
A
Since 1x=x−1\frac{1}{x}=x^{-1}, the exponent −1-1 comes down in front, giving −x−2-x^{-2}. On the graph, the curve goes down as you move right on both x>0x>0 and x<0x<0 (negative slope).
