Derivatives: rules and functions

Derivative of log x

The derivative of the natural logarithm logx\log x is 1x\frac{1}{x}.

(logx)=1x,(logx)=1x\begin{gathered} (\log x)'=\frac{1}{x}, \\[4pt] (\log|x|)'=\frac{1}{x} \end{gathered}

The natural logarithm logx\log x differentiates to 1x\frac{1}{x}. To include negative xx, write logx\log|x|; its derivative is the same 1x\frac{1}{x}.

For a base aa other than ee, divide by the constant lna\ln a: the derivative is 1xlna\frac{1}{x\ln a}.

xyy = log xa(a, log a)
The slope of y=log x is 1/x: slope 1 at x=1, flatter as x grows.Drag the dot
